The Fresh or the Burn?

By November 29, 2012

Follow me on:

Which do you prefer? Bowling on the fresh or bowling on the burn? If you're unfamiliar with the terms, "the fresh" refers to bowling on a freshly oiled lane. "The burn" refers to bowling on a lane that has already been used, and thus the oil has been "burned" from its original condition.

The fresh is nice because you can go in with an idea of what you want to do, then play the lanes the way you want. The burn usually requires you to play the lanes the way they'll let you and has very little to do with what you want.

Some bowlers relish the burn just for that reason. The most versatile bowlers can often separate themselves from the pack by adapting to the burn. Which type are you? Do you like the fresh, or do you like the burn?

I typically like the burn because I prefer the way my ball moves as the lanes break down and become drier. That being said, I can usually get a good read on the fresh, but my second game is nearly always my worst as the lanes transition from fresh to burn.

I currently average in the mid-180s my first two games, but 211 in my third, and almost always bowl higher scores when open bowling since the lanes are not treated right before I get there.
