Cheetah Oil Pattern

By , About.com Guide

Quick Info:

Length: 35 feet
Oil Volume: Moderate-Heavy

Description:

The Cheetah usually gives up high scores—but not without risk. The heavy oil and short pattern require bowlers to flirt with the gutter in order to strike.

How to Play the Pattern:

The Cheetah is so short, bowlers have to risk gutter balls in order to create the best possible angle toward the pocket. Those who do that successfully tend to shoot very high scores.

When bowling on a Cheetah pattern, keep your ball as far outside as possible. It will start to hook 35 feet down the lane, so unless your ball makes it through the oil within a few boards from the gutter, or if you throw the ball with little or no hook, you’re going to miss your mark.

On this pattern, the winner won’t necessarily be the bowler who can hit the pocket—he’s going to need to strike, too. The Viper creates some exciting moments on Tour, as it’s usually a race toward some very high scores.
