Osku Palermaa is one of the main reasons two-handed bowling is gaining not only more notoriety, but also more respect among the bowling community in general. He and Jason Belmonte, among others, are putting revolutions on the ball other bowlers can’t match, and thus can play the lanes differently and make the pins explode.
For some spare shots, typically on the right side of the lane, Palermaa will throw the ball with one hand at a speed so impressive, some people actually hope he’ll leave a 10 pin just to see him chuck his spare ball down there.
During the 2011-2012 PBA Tour season, Palermaa became the first two-handed bowler to win a major title by defeating Ryan Shafer in the PBA World Championship, which also made Palermaa the first international bowler to win that tournament.
Prior to joining the PBA Tour in 2009, Palermaa was winning tournaments all over the world. He was the European Bowling Tour (EBT) ranking champion for three consecutive years, from 2007 to 2009, and also finished second in the rankings in the two years prior.
Joining the PBA Tour
Palermaa made his PBA Tour debut in 2009, making it to television once, but he began making his mark the following year at the World Series of Bowling. He earned his first career PBA Tour victory in the Shark Championship and bowled on television a total of three times.
While Belmonte was the first two-hander to garner any real attention, Palermaa’s performance over his first two years on Tour proved both that Belmonte wasn’t as much of a novelty as some originally thought, and also that Palermaa was going to be a top competitor on Tour.
At the 2011-2012 World Series of Bowling, Palermaa became the first two-hander to win a major title, simultaneously becoming the first international player to win the PBA World Championship.
Bowling Style and Attributes
Bowlers with high rev rates have always been able to destroy oil patterns. That is, the large number of rotations on the ball push the oil around and make the lane conditions extremely tough for opponents.
Palermaa is one of the best in the world at obliterating the oil. With his two-handed shovel style, he’s able to both create and adapt to difficult lane conditions, which help him get stronger as the game goes on. If you’re in a match with Palermaa, you want to beat him early, because he’s going to get better the longer you go.
